The new JC Penney commercial for their American Living line is using the Robert Plant and Allison Krauss version of “Killing the Blues” from their cd Raising Sand.
Killing the Blues Lyrics (iTunes)
![]()
Leaves were falling ..Just like embers
In colors red and gold they set us on fire
Burning just like a moonbeam ..in our eyes
Chorus:
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud.
Killing the Blues
I am guilty of something
I hope you never do because there is nothing
Sadder than losing .. yourself in love
Repeat Chorus:
Repeat Chorus:
Now, you ask me Just to leave you
To go out on my own and get what I need to
You want me to find ..what I’ve already had

The second I heard that song I ran to my computer and googled it! I was struck immediately by the wonderful blend of two gorgeous voices and the simple, minimalist guitar work that let them breathe! I bought it right away! Good choice, JC Penny’s. I’ll give you some points for the atmosphere. (Unfortunately, your new clothing line is trying to borrow too much from old Ralph Lauren ads, and the clothing is dismally rehashed.)
Cheers!

That song was great, Raising Sand is the album, i just bought the whole thing.
The new line “American Living” is by RALPH LAUREN. And yes the song “Killing The Blues” as well as the entire “RAISING SAND” is excellent!!!
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. John Prine wrote and sings this song better than anyone ever will!! Listen to him sing it and you’ll know what I mean.

I have to say I’m particular to the Shawn Colvin version off her album called Cover Girl.
That is a great song. It’s called “Killing the Blues” off of the Robert Plant and Alison Krauss album Raising Sand. You can purchase it from

This song is so beautiful that it mesmorized me. I downloaded the CD off of I Tunes.
Thank you:)
wow… heard the song and loved it. oh.. then i found out it was robert plant… i love roberto plant.
“leaves were falling”…that’s exactly how Ramble On starts out. It seems like Robert Plant is going to do very well on his tour with Alison Krauss.
The song was actually written quite a few years back by Roly Salley, who amongst other things has been playing bass with Chris Isaak for over 20 years. He recorded his own version on his solo record released in 2006. http://www.rowlandsalley.com/
Great to know about the solo album. I can’t believe it took so long for someone to mention Roly. His late 70s version from the old Woodstock Mountains lp still beats any version I’ve heard. I play the tune whenever I can, usually with a down-and-out guitar player named Dave who knew Roly years ago in Rockford, IL. I hope JC Penney is giving him a bundle of money!
Fyi: the song is great, but the location rocks. It’s a little town on eastern Virginia on the middle penninsula. Known to occupants as the middle of no-where, but is actually now the second most desirable place to live. It is Kilmarnock, It is my town!!
Simply great. I’m so glad I could find out who performed this (from the jcpenney commercial). Alison Krauss’s voice is so smooth and sweet. The music, and the lyrics, are magic. This doesn’t happen very often! Nice selection on JCP’s part. I think it’ll make people think again about them.
Great song. I thought it might be the Plant/Krause team but I had never heard this particular cut before.
It was driving me crazy, I am glad to find out who does it. I also checked out that Rowland Salley website, great stuff. Amazing that this guy has played bass for Chris Isaac for 20 years, he is as good a singer, writer and player as Chris, and I like C.I. a lot.
I knew it had to be Robert Plant……it sounded very reminiscent of the duet with Alison Krause “the Letter” Gotta get the CD now since it has rave reviews!!
The are playing in concert in Boston in June!
SO glad someone researched this… I don’t get very excited about a song very often. This time I did. Wow! I’ll have to pick up Raising Sand. Thanks guys!
[…] me off guard. Stunningly beautiful album from two seemingly opposite front (wo)men. I know JC Penny’s is using this in a commercial so I am obviously a little late to the party but this is a damn good […]
Thanks for posting this — I loved it when I heard it in the commercial and was glad to get more info about it so I could hear the whole thing.
